This digital portrait is a full-body study of Chibbacci, a dog with a "little clown" personality that I wanted to capture in a vibrant, outdoor setting.

Capturing a Scruffy Character

I really enjoyed the process of bringing this piece to life. It took some time to find the perfect reference, but we eventually landed on a photo with beautiful lighting that really shows off Chibbacci’s scruffy texture. I decided to place him in a lush field of clovers to make his warm fur tones stand out. One of the main goals was to make sure his curious and playful nature came through in his expression. I also adjusted the overall color palette to include warmer, more orange-toned hues so the painting would feel bright and welcoming once it was printed and framed.

Although this is a digital painting, I used my signature style with thick, visible brushstrokes to give the artwork a physical, painterly soul. I focused on the way the sunlight hits the top of his head and his ears, using bright highlights to create a sense of depth. By using high-contrast colors in the background, I made sure that Chibbacci is the clear focal point. This piece is designed to be a lasting family heirloom, celebrating a pet that has been a huge part of the family for years.
