This commission was incredibly special to work on. The collector wanted to surprise her parents with a lasting portrait of their beloved senior dog while she was still here to enjoy it. Painting black fur is always an exciting, creative challenge because it is never just "black"; it acts like a mirror for the environment. We chose a breathtaking "golden hour" photo as our reference, allowing me to capture the dramatic sunlight wrapping around her coat and bringing her serene, gentle expression completely to the forefront.

To frame her beautifully, I set her against a bold, high-saturation crimson backdrop and included loose, painterly violet flowers nestled in green grass along the bottom. My signature style uses heavy impasto layers and energetic brushstrokes to build a rich, sculptural surface. Instead of flat dark tones, I packed the shadows of her coat with deep plums, rich violets, and cool blues, while letting warm creams, intense oranges, and sunny yellows make the highlighted fur completely radiate with light.
