Designing a Peaceful Composition

I loved the gentle, calm atmosphere of this commission. The collector originally wanted a very large scale, so we settled on a 16x16-inch square canvas to give the body of the pup plenty of room to stretch out across the space. To keep the focus entirely on her resting posture and soft, amber eyes, I worked with the collector to eliminate distracting background elements and clutter. The final scene describes her head resting heavily between her front paws, completely relaxed on her favorite bedding.

I chose a split background of rich sky blue and lavender to create a clean, contemporary frame that enhances the warm tan and cream tones of her coat. My signature style uses thick impasto layers and visible brushstrokes to give the folds of the blankets and the texture of the fur a tangible, three-dimensional volume. Instead of flat shades, I layered cool pinks, mint greens, and soft turquoises into the highlights, giving this comforting scene a radiant energy that fits perfectly into a family home.
