An "Unconventional Portrait" Built on Collaboration

I absolutely adored working on this commission because it completely challenges what a traditional family portrait can be. The collector reached out with a wonderful, candid photo of her and her mother having fun outdoors, one striking a dramatic backbend while the other balances playfully over her. Instead of a stiff, formal headshot crop, I treated them like dynamic statues perfectly embedded within a magical environment. To emphasize the joy and energy of the memory, we co-designed a vibrant, dreamlike summer sky dominated by a giant, sweeping rainbow that mimics the beautiful arch of their poses.

The layout completely strips away distracting background clutter, replacing it with a loose, painterly park scene filled with sketchy palm trees and an ornamental pond. Because the collector was a fan of my signature glass and liquid reflections, I spent an entire dedicated studio session refining the water, layering neon blues, bright magentas, and deep violets to give the pond a glossy, translucent sheen. I pushed the color temperature of the entire canvas to its limits, swapping out standard clothing and tile shades for bold, non-traditional pigments. Applied with a thick, sculptural impasto style, the final result is a radiant legacy piece built to spread continuous joy.
