This hand-painted commission was a journey in trust. When Ayu and I were looking at the initial mockup, she was a bit worried about the "blurry brown fruit" in the middle, the Snake Fruit (Salak). But that is exactly where the magic of a custom oil painting happens! I wanted to transform those earthy, scaly textures into a playground of spectral highlights and vibrant light, making the brown tones feel just as energetic as the deep purples of the mangosteen.
Working on this 12x12 inch panel allowed me to focus on the buttery texture that defines my style. By using thick impasto strokes, I gave each fruit a tactile, three-dimensional presence that you can almost feel. I moved beyond the flat reference photo to find the neon-infused shadows and luminous reflections that make a still life oil painting feel like a celebration of a moment. The final result is an original artwork that turns a simple kitchen scene into a striking multiverse of color.
Why this commission is a chromatic gem
Texture Exploration: I used heavy, energetic brushstrokes to capture the unique, scale-like skin of the Snake Fruit and the velvety surface of the mangosteen.
Luminous Depth: A masterclass in high-contrast color theory, using unexpected blues and violets to create shadow and form.
Modern Still Life: A fresh, contemporary oil painting take on traditional fruit subjects, perfect for a modern home.
Collaborative Vision: We worked closely to ensure the scale and composition felt balanced and striking on the wood panel.
