Creating a Cohesive Family Portrait

Painting multiple animals on a single canvas is always a rewarding challenge. For this piece, I combined different reference photos to bring Buddy, Mabel, and Goose into one balanced scene. The goal was to capture them sitting closely together, looking straight ahead with their distinct expressions. I removed extra distracting elements from the original pictures, like everyday collars, to focus completely on their faces and unique fur textures. The middle pup wears a favorite patterned bandana, which adds a personal, playful touch to the composition. They are all resting comfortably on a large, smiling face cushion that grounds the bottom of the canvas.

For the background, I wanted something clean but visually engaging, so I went with a deep teal filled with large, patterned circles. This graphic choice creates a beautiful contrast that helps the rich browns, blacks, and greys of their coats stand out. I applied the professional oil paint thickly with energetic brushstrokes, giving the fur a real sense of weight and softness. It was a true labor of love, and I am so happy to know it now holds a permanent place in the family home.
