I absolutely adored working on this holiday commission. The collector reached out wanting a headshot portrait that would truly showcase her dog's happy, vibrant energy. While discussing the layout, we brainstormed the perfect backdrop, settling on a solid, intense orangey-yellow sky to perfectly match her sweet name, Clementine. This radiant background choice provides an incredible chromatic vibration against the cooler tones of her coat.

When painting multi-colored or merle coats, I look for hidden depth; instead of using simple whites and blacks, I built up the contours of her face using greenish-purplish greys, deep indigo blues, and soft lavender shadows. This deliberate push in temperature creates a magnificent contrast that makes the warm fur patches and bright pink tongue jump forward. Applied thickly with large, energetic impasto strokes, the final artwork balances expressive realism with bold texture on a heavy-duty gallery-wrapped support.
