An "Eggciting" Culinary Composition

This commission was an absolute joy to paint. The collector was inspired by bento cooking videos and wanted to collaborate on a piece that captured the rich texture, variety, and creativity of a traditional Japanese lunchbox. We explored several angles and ingredient layouts before creating a custom Photoshop mockup that blended her favorite elements. The final layout centers on an oval wooden container packed with a soft-boiled egg, crisp asparagus, bright cherry tomatoes, leafy greens, sesame-crusted chicken, flower-shaped carrots, and a cute little octopus sausage sitting over a bed of fluffy rice.

During the painting process, we even brainstormed fine details, like adding a tiny, charming beak to the octopus sausage to give it a playful, casual touch. I used professional-grade oil paints applied with my signature heavy impasto brushwork to mimic the textures of the food, from the glossy, translucent sheen of the jammy egg yolk to the crisp skin of the tomatoes. Set against a soft pastel backdrop with subtle color-blocked reflections, this piece perfectly celebrates how art can find magic in everyday culinary pleasures.
