Capturing a Quirky Habit

I really loved painting this piece because the pose is so funny and full of character. The goal was to capture her looking right at the camera with her front paws up in the air. To do this, pose justice and fit both her expressive face and her paws without crowding the composition, we went with a larger 14x14-inch stretched canvas. This size gave me the room I needed to paint her features at a natural size, giving the portrait a much more intense and lifelike presence.

The background is a simplified interpretation of a tiled floor, which allowed me to use clean grid lines to add depth and frame her shape beautifully. I applied the professional oil paint thickly, using bold, visible brushstrokes to bring out the softness of her coat and the structure of her paws. Instead of sticking to flat browns and whites, I layered cool teals, pinks, and lavenders into the shadows while letting warm creams catch the bright light. The final result is a sweet, light-filled tribute that perfectly shows off her goofy personality.
