I really loved working on the lighting in this piece. The reference photo had such a natural, happy energy, and I wanted to make sure that came through on the canvas. I decided to blur the background into chunky, organic blocks of color so that all the attention stays on her expression. By simplifying the trees and the cafe setting, I was able to emphasize the scene's depth and make the subject feel more present.

The bright green of the umbrella provided a great contrast to the warm skin tones and the pops of red from the strawberries in the foreground. I used a lot of thick paint and visible brushstrokes to give the hair and clothing a sense of movement. I painted this on a handmade wood panel using professional oil paints, building up layers to create a surface that is tactile and full of life. It’s a piece built to preserve a happy memory for years to come.
