Working on this commission was incredibly special because the collector mentioned her pup normally avoids the camera. We went through several options, ranging from a funny, derpy face to this completely adorable, clear glance. I recommended a square 8x8-inch format to ensure the headshot stayed perfectly in proportion, allowing me to focus entirely on capturing a natural and loving expression that the collector would recognize instantly.

I built up the portrait using professional oil paints, layering a spectrum of unexpected pastels to give the fur dimension and volume. Instead of using flat colors, I pulled soft pinks, light teals, and warm creams out of the highlights, while grounding the shadows in rich violets. I applied the paint thickly with visible, energetic brushstrokes to create a tactile surface that is full of life and movement. Finished in the studio with an archival protective varnish, this original piece is built to stand the test of time as a beautiful family keepsake.
