Takeout Treat: Custom Egg Rolls Oil Painting

I painted this original oil piece to celebrate a favorite comfort food, turning a delicious stack of crispy egg rolls into a vibrant, texture-rich still life.

A Guilty Pleasure on Canvas

This commission was a fun learning experience for me. Back home in Spain, we usually call these spring rolls, so working with the collector to capture classic American-style takeout was a total blast. The main request was to feature a stack of golden egg rolls with a couple of them cut open to showcase the colorful vegetable filling inside. I positioned them right in front of those iconic white and pink takeout boxes, complete with the red pagoda design and chopsticks, to lean fully into the nostalgic theme.

To capture that perfect, crunchy texture, I relied heavily on my signature brushwork, carving out the flaky, blistered layers of the fried wrappers with thick oil paint. I paired the rich, glowing oranges and yellows of the food with a contrasting pastel mint background and soft lavender shadows. It was an incredibly fun piece to paint, and it proves that even our favorite late-night treats can be turned into a piece of fine art that lights up a kitchen wall.
