The Heirloom Ring: Custom Hand and Rose Oil Painting

This 10x12 inch original oil painting is a deeply personal piece created to capture a lifelong family memory and a cherished heirloom.

A Visual Legacy of Love and Memory

The story behind this commission is incredibly touching. The painting centers on an antique ring that the subject’s grandmother wore to Sunday church services, a ring her granddaughter would playfully spin during mass as a child. To honor this memory, I painted her adult hand wearing the heirloom ring while gently holding a blooming red rose. The falling petals symbolize the passage of time and the beautiful transition of a legacy being passed down. I painted this on a handmade prepared wood panel to ensure it lasts as a true family keepsake.

The collector originally envisioned a completely black background, but I decided to go with a deep, moody indigo blue instead. This dark background provides a rich contrast that allows the warm skin tones, the bright red fingernails, and the deep crimson of the rose to vibrate with light. I used professional oil paints applied with thick, visible brushstrokes to give the hand and the delicate flower petals a tangible, sculptural feel. I focused heavily on the highlights of the metal and the center gem to make sure the ring shines out as the true focal point of the artwork.
